From afar, we have been following the news from Israel. As Progressive Zionists, it’s with deep concern that we note the threats of extremist elements of the government to religious pluralism, human rights and the judicial system. Rabbi Mikelberg has just returned from a Rabbinic Mission to Israel. Coincidentally, Rev Gary van der Meer of St John’s Church has also just returned from a Christian Study Mission. The two are delighted to have an opportunity to reflect on their recent journeys, in particular the realities on the ground that they witnessed at this important moment in time.
On Purim, the story of Esther takes us to Shushan, traditionally associated with ancient Persia. To this day, many Persian Jews refer to themselves as the “Children of Esther.” Our very own Tina Ahava Azarin is delighted to speak to her narrative as a Persian Jew. She’ll enlighten us about the Jewish community of Iran and speak to the history of the community as well as highlighting various Persian Purim customs. Charmed by the traditional megillah reading, join us for this more modern tale on a journey of discovery. We’ll even provide Persian treats alongside hamentashen!
Advance registration required. Please register below. In this alarming moment — as Israel’s new government makes bold moves to undermine democratic protections — important Israeli voices are urging supporters abroad to stand with them.
