Human Rights Shabbat
December 12, 2020 @ 10:15 am - 12:00 pm
On Saturday Dec 12th at 10:15 am, our community will celebrate Human Rights Shabbat, an initiative to educate Jewish communities about the intersection of Jewish values and universal human rights and coincides with the yearly celebration of the ratification of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948.
With the backdrop of Chanukah, we will be empowering our community to stand tall like the Macabbees and rededicate ourselves to the protection and promotion of fundamental rights and freedoms for all.
We are delighted to host a renowned advocate for justice, the Honourable Irwin Cotler. A former Minister of Justice and Attorney General, and current Chair of the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, Mr. Cotler was recently appointed as Canada’s first special envoy on preserving Holocaust remembrance and combating anti-Semitism.
Irwin Cotler will join Rabbi Daniel Mikelberg and Rabbi Dara Lithwick in conversation as part of Shabbat services on Shabbat morning December 12th at 10:15 and will speak to what motivates him as a Jew to advocate for human rights around the world, his vision for the future, and how we can all be lights for human rights.
